Visit Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, which once hosted the world's largest open-cut copper mine. The Panguna Copper Mine started producing income in 1972. Gold, copper and silver were mined from Panguna until 1989, when agitation by the local landowners caused its closure. The landowners' disruption in 1989 also led to a bloody civil war between the PNG Defence Forces at a cost of 5,000 lives. Although the mine has been closed to the outside world, limited access has been allowed through the boom gate at Morgan Junction now known as the "No-Go-Zone". Read more... |
